名古屋大の内田良准教授が主宰する学校リスク研究所によると、１９８３年度からの２８年間で、学校で柔道をしていて死亡した生徒は１１４人（中学３９、高校７５）を数える。毎年４人が亡くなっている計算で、競技人口当たりの発生率も突出している。
